The hero is sometimes a bad guy. Here are the best games with supernatural characters you can play as.
In some games, players take control of a supernatural being, as sometimes the heroes are the monsters or at least monster-like creatures. Having supernatural characters that you can play as has both pros and cons. It can give players more power and explain why a character has powers that can change reality.
But game developers have to be careful to make a well-rounded character. This means making sure that the character’s otherworldly powers are balanced so that the game isn’t too easy, but also giving the character’s personality and story a more human touch so that players can still connect with the character they’re controlling and the supernatural game as a whole is fun.
Darksiders
Darksiders is a fun action-adventure hack-and-slash game with a large number of supernatural characters and enemies and almost none of human ones. After the end of the world and humanity, players take control of War, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, and help him fight demons in a losing battle.
The player has to fight through hordes of demonic creatures in an ever-growing world. As the player progresses, the map opens up, revealing new locations, new enemies, and new weapons that can be used to try out different fighting styles until the player finds one that works best for them and is the most fun to play. Darksiders is a fun supernatural game to play, with fast and fun battles and a bold new take on angels and demons from the Bible.
Murdered: Soul Suspect
Murdered: Soul Suspect gives players a truly unique experience by letting them play as the ghost of recently dead detective Ronan O’Conner. Ronan, and by extension the players, have to solve the hardest case a police officer could face: their own murder. This is so Ronan can go to the afterlife and meet up with his wife Julia.
The first thing that happens in the game is that Ronan is killed by “The Bell Killer,” the famous serial killer he was trying to catch. Ronan wanders around Salem looking for the person who killed him. But there’s more to the game than just finding the killer. Demons, which are scary creatures that eat the souls of other ghosts in order to become human again one day, add a stealth element to the game. To avoid being seen, the player must move carefully around these creatures.
Vampyr
The reception to Dontnod’s foray into the gothic world of Victorian London and vampires wasn’t great, but the game is a real gem. Players take on the role of Jonathan Reid, a newly turned vampire who just got back from the front lines of World War I and, ironically, specializes in blood transfusion. Along with his need for blood and dislike of the sun. Jonathan gains a number of skills that players can use as they wish.
London is being destroyed by the Spanish flu, and Jonathan has to choose between keeping his Hippocratic oath and learning to control his hunger. If players want, they can let Jonathan’s hunger win and make a bloody path through the streets of London. The choices the players make will affect how the story ends. How other people feel about Jonathan, and the city itself. If there are more deaths, there will be more supernatural creatures in the area, like “Skal” vampires and even werewolves.
Devil May Cry
Witty, self-centered, loud, and showy. These are the words that best describe Dante, the main character in the Devil May Cry series. Even though he took a back seat in Devil May Cry 4 and let Nero take the lead. They also help to make his character likeable, even though some parts of him can be annoying. But since Dante is half-demon and the son of a human woman and a very powerful demon who loved her, maybe his annoying traits can be overlooked.
Dante is part demon, but he is also a dedicated demon hunter. He uses twin guns, swords, and a wide range of powers to stop hell from taking over. Even though the idea behind Devil May Cry isn’t necessarily new. The game stands out because of its unique monster designs and fast-paced combat. The fast-paced combat actively encouraged players to combo attacks by giving them a streak score. And the latest installment made the main combat music louder for higher scores.
The Wolf Among Us
In this noir murder mystery game, happy endings are shown to be a lie. The Wolf Among Us is based on the popular graphic novels Fables. Which are in turn based on well-known fairytales like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and The Three Little Pigs. Many of the heroes and princesses from these stories fall from grace after being forced to leave their homes and live in the slums of New York. When fables start dying in horrible ways, it makes things worse for them.
Players take on the roles of Bigby Wolf, the Sheriff of Fabletown. And the big bad wolf from the stories about the three little pigs and Red Riding Hood. Bigby can change into a full wolf or take on lycanthropic traits like claws and yellow eyes. While still mostly looking like a human, just like a werewolf.
Castlevania
Castlevania is a unique take on the Dracula story. It takes the famous vampire from the past and tells a new story about him. His beloved wife’s death is what starts his war against humans. And he has a son named Alucard who is a dhampir. The story also includes members of the Belmont clan, a family of vampire hunters.
The Castlevania series now has up to forty games, if you count spin-offs. And a big animated show on Netflix, which shows how popular and well-liked it is. Players take on the roles of members of the Belmont family, who are the main characters of the series. They go up against Count Dracula himself. But they also have to deal with waves of demons that could destroy the world if they aren’t stopped.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
Even though it was in development hell just like Bloodlines 2, Vampire: the Masquerade – Bloodlines came out anyway. However, it was full of problems and bugs that made it unplayable for some people and an unenjoyable mess for those who could get it to work. But because fans worked hard and were dedicated, an unofficial patch was made that fixed a lot of the problems and even added some extra content, making it a cult classic among fans.
In Bloodlines, the player takes on the role of a young vampire and is thrown into the richly lored World of Darkness. Where they must follow the Prince’s rules to show that they deserve his mercy. But, like any good RPG, the player is free to explore the world, do side quests. And ultimately choose which faction to join: the Camarilla, the Anarchs, the Kuei-Jin, or go completely independent.
Resident Evil Village
Village was a great experience with new and exciting bad guys and a sad ending for Ethan’s story. Which was taken over by his daughter Rosemary. Each of the Four Lords represented a different kind of horror. They paid homage to the stories that inspired them while giving the player scares and suspense as they explored their domains and eventually met the Lord themselves.
At first glance, it might look like players are in charge of a normal husband and father with a strangely strong hand that could just be part of 8 Ball Pool game. But when players get to the end of Village, they find out the truth: Ethan has been one of the molded since the beginning of Resident Evil 7, where Jack killed him. It was a clever twist that most players didn’t see coming, and it explains why Ethan is so strong.
